Prof. Dennis, students forge bonds abroad

Professor Sam Dennis Jr. has teamed up with the UW Arboretum’s Earth Partnership Initiative to develop a service-learning field course in Nicaragua. This past May, the class worked with a rural school outside of Granada and the National Botanical Garden in León linking stormwater management, water quality, and climate change through ecological restoration and environmental education. In Grenada, the UW students led design workshops with teachers, students, and community members which culminated in an intense day of planting. Even Prof. Dennis was put to work. The students also worked with biologists from the Jardin Botánico Ambiental in Leòn to promote dry tropical forest restoration efforts at the garden. In the future, the department hopes to develop even stronger relationships with our Nicaraguan partners.
